The tools we used

Depending on the type of Web server you have, there are a variety of reliable, cost-effective HTTP compression solutions available.

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)

  • IIS 4.0 on Windows NT does not offer internal compression at all, and while IIS 5.0 on Windows 2000 does include a compression option, it is marred by significant limitations in regards to features and compatibility. httpZip is the best, most affordable third party tool for fully configurable, safe HTTP compression and acceleration on IIS 4/5.
  • With Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0 Microsoft made improving compression with Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0 a priority. As a result, IIS 6.0 built-in compression has made ISAPI compression unnecessary (with the exception of certain edge cases). To get the absolute most out of IIS 6.0 built-in compression, check out ZipEnable for enhanced configuration and management capabilities.

Netscape Enterprise Server

  • Hardware solution for compression - Consider a hardware compression appliance. If you know of a software solution for Netscape HTTP compression, e-mail us, and we will add it to the list.
