Port80 Surveys HTTP Cache Control on the Top 1000 Corporations' Web Sites

Since 2003, Port80 Software has surveyed the sites of Fortune 1000 companies to discover their use of cache control. Through the elimination of unnecessary requests for repeat Web visitors, proper cache control is one of the most effective, inexpensive ways to accelerate a Web site or application. Web pages are served more quickly out of the user's browser cache whenever possible, while both the server and the network are freed from the burden of handling unnecessary validation requests.

July 2007 brings the third installment of our Top 1000 Cache Control Survey. Port80 downloaded each site's home page with supporting files and analyzed the response headers to determine which of the pages' objects are, in principle, cacheable (essentially, all external resources which are not markup) and what percentage of those cacheable objects include explicit expiration-based cache control headers.

Review our current survey results, analyze your own site's cache control headers, learn more about expiration-based cache control, or look up a Top 1000 full cache control analysis below:

Fortune 1000 Sites Using More Caching; Room for Improvement in Detailed Cache Control Policies
[ Top 1000 Cache Control Survey, July 2007 ]

Fortune 1000 sites use cache control to shave seconds off repeat visitors' download times -- while boosting server availability.

This Port80 Top 1000 Cache Control Survey found that 37.9%, or 379 out of 1000, Fortune 1000 Web sites currently use expiration-based cache control to reduce server requests.

This is the area for improvement among Fortune 1000 sites with cache control: figure out which dependent objects like CSS, JavaScript, and image files like GIFs and JPEGs (or video files) are not changing any time soon, and let browsers know what to expect when they return via cache control to avoid redownloading files that exist in their browser cache.

Our Cache Check tool can give you an idea of the dramatic improvements possible with cache control for either a Fortune 1000 Web site or for your own. And, if you would like a custom analysis of your Web site's cache control policies, we'd be happy to help.

Cache Check:
Evaluate cache control on your own server or favorite site

Even more than HTTP compression, effective cache control is an excellent way to accelerate a Web site or application. Serving more resources directly from the user's browser cache will accelerate page loads, and eliminating unnecessary validation requests will reduce network traffic, cut down on bills, and ease server strain.
