What is Port80 Software all about?

Anything about HTTP and IIS. Bringing some respect to IIS as a Web server. Making sure Apache Web server folks stop kicking sand in our faces.

What does the name Port80 Software mean?

Port80 is the default port number where a Web server listens for and responds to incoming HTTP requests. Our IIS server modules enhance security, performance and user experience by filtering or augmenting requests as they come into your Web server. Most likely, these requests are coming into your Web server via Port80.

What is an IIS server module?

An IIS server module is software that resides on and directly interacts with Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) Web server on Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 systems to extend its functionality (similar to the relationship between ASP.NET components and ASP.NET). Our implementation usually is via ISAPI filters and extensions, though we also provide other software solutions.

Why would I use an IIS server module?

The unique advantage of an IIS server module is the capability to act upon each request at any point in the request/response life cycle. There are a wide range of tasks involving security, performance, and user experience that can be best tackled at this level of a Web application. Why? For repetitive or global tasks involving HTTP requests, this is the most efficient place to get the job done. The wide use of standard Apache modules in the Linux/Unix world shows the benefits of using server modules to enhance Web server functionality. Port80 Software is now bringing that value to the Microsoft IIS space. While we are developing Windows-based software, the success of Apache modules has provided the inspiration for Port80's next generation IIS server modules.

What is your upgrade policy?

The following policies apply to all Port80 Software software products, including the w3compiler.

Minor version upgrades for compatibility and bug fixes will always be freely available. Major version upgrades represent leaps in the product technology (with new features and benefits) and will always be more than worth the nominal cost of a major version upgrade. Please note: for major version upgrades, you will have to reinstall the new version and use a new or updated license key to activate the software.

Minor version upgrades are always free (e.g. version 1.0 to version 1.1), and patches are available for download anytime.

Major version upgrades will cost 35% of the current software price (e.g. version 1.3 to version 2.0). Please contact Port80 Software Sales to get a quote on a major version upgrade.

For information on LinkDeny IP address database upgrades, please review the documentation for more information on options, pricing, and deployment.

Do you plan on doing a product to solve problem "x" in the near future? How about custom development projects?

While we can't reveal all our upcoming products, we can tell you that we focus on performance, security and user experience, first and foremost. Furthermore, our corporate goals are to provide more Apache equivalent functions on IIS, so URL rewriting, speed enhancements via HTTP encoding, compression, data hiding, content negotiation, and security improvements are either being addressed or will be shortly. Beyond that, we have a few extra projects in the works, so you'll have to stay tuned. If you have any product or feature requests, just let us know.

If you have a specific custom development project for Microsoft IIS or HTTP in general, consult our IIS Mechanics division to get a Port80 development team working for your organization.
