Netcraft's June 2006 numbers show Microsoft IIS continuing to chip away at Big Brother Apache in the global Web server market, with IIS now accounting for close to 30% of the market share. Read more at http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2006/06/04/june_2006_web_server_survey.html.
Of particular interest is the fact that IIS gained 4.5 million sites in Netcraft's survey... only 1.6 million can be attributed to GoDaddy's big switch to IIS and parked domains moving from Apache to IIS in their system that Netcraft tracks to gauge what technology is serving the most Web sites. Netcraft, usually the first to kick sand in Redmond's face, had this to say: “While those [GoDaddy] parked domains were a major factor in Microsoft's gains, Windows also saw solid growth in active sites, hostnames that contain content and likely to represent developed web sites.”
Meanwhile, the Linux/Apache folks are a bit miffed at GoDaddy and the swing from IIS to Apache. The new site, http://www.opensourceparking.com/, encourages all to change their domain name parking to Apache...
Come on, guys. You're still the biggest Web server out there, according to Netcraft, at least. What's amatter? IIS 7 keeping you up at night?
All in good fun,
