Zip Everywhere? It's Coming...

Since we develop HTTP compression filters using the Zip algorithm (specifically GZip in our httpZip tool – a whole lotta zipping going on), Port80 is always interested in new or novel uses for saving data with the algorithm. 

Today, we find out that Microsoft plans on using Zip heavily in Office 12 because they will store files by default in XML – and now Microsoft is coming to the conclusion that many have that XML documents can be extremely verbose and often need to be crunched! 

Enter the Zip:

 

"What’s new for Microsoft is compacting the often overweight XML text files using industry standard Zip compression technology to compress and decompress the data within a document."

So, if it is XML everywhere, it might be Zip everywhere as well in the future!
